What God Is Doing Today

Holy Spirit As Dove

Pentecost

Fr. Mark Gatto

Preached: May 28, 2023

What is God doing today?  What is God doing in our world today?  What is God doing in the church today?  What is God doing in your life today?

The Feast of Pentecost, our celebration of the Holy Spirit, is about God doing something new.  It is about God continuing to bring new life today.

After the death and resurrection of Jesus, the disciples did not have a clear picture of what to do.  Jesus did not leave a stone blueprint which they just had to follow.  The gift of the Holy Spirit was guiding them to share in the continuing work of God in the world and church.  Through the ages, the church is called to continue to listen to the voice of God, to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us in always new ways.

When we read the Scriptures and celebrate the Sacraments, it is not just about remembering the great acts of God in the past.  It is meant to guide us to see and understand better what God is doing today in our time.  Tradition is not a stone monument from the past.  It is a living way that directs us in the new realities we face today.

Pentecost is about the Holy Spirit filling the disciples with new vision and new courage to join in the mission of God.  Jesus says, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”  Jesus wants to send us out to share in the work of God.  We are to share in the mission of God in our world today.

So, each of us needs to reflect on what God is doing today.  What is God doing in our world today?  What is God doing in the church today?  What is God doing in your life today?  We need to watch the news, we need to prayerfully meditate on the Scriptures, we need to meet Jesus in the Sacraments.  This will help us to see more clearly what God is doing today.

Look at our world today, what would God be doing?

Look at our church today, what would God be doing?

Look at your life today, what would God be doing?

Then, join in what God is doing in the world, in the church, in your life, today.
